Choosing the right wig for you is not an easy decision. Many factors come into play such as style, fit, maintenance and cost. What style of wig suits your look? Can you look and feel good with a simple lace wig or do you need a full cap wig? We’re going to look at three styles of wig, the lace top, a skin top and the full cap style wig, and help you come to a decision about what is the right wig for you.
There are many reasons someone would wear a wig. The loss of your hair can be a real blow to your self-esteem. A wig can give you back your confidence and help you look and feel good. As always, if you have any questions or want more detail feel free to speak to our understanding team. We understand that getting a wig can be a sensitive issue. We respect you and your privacy and are here to help you feel good about yourself.
Why do people wear wigs?
There are many reasons people opt to wear a wig. There can be medical reasons either through natural hair loss or people undergoing certain medical procedures such as chemotherapy.
For those suffering from natural hair loss or thinning of their hair, a wig is a common solution. It helps people regain their self-confidence and help them feel good about themselves.
Lace Top Wigs
A lace top wig is one that has a lace construction over the entire crown. This creates a natural scalp look. It allows for natural styling and multi-directional parting opportunities. We sew our lace top wigs by hand, one hair at a time. This allows natural movement of hair, such as when the wind catches it. It makes the wig light weight and easy to wear.
Lace top wigs work for ladies who have intermittent hair loss or a more significant amount of hair loss. We can seamlessly blend the colours to match your natural hair colour. No one will be able to notice anything unnatural about your hair.
Pros of a Lace Top Wig
- Natural Hairline. The way our lace top wigs are constructed, it can give you a natural looking hairline. You may have seen how some wigs have a severe front hairline. Our Lace top wigs sit naturally and look fantastic.
- Natural Appearance. The way this wig sits on your hairline means your hair looks natural and part of you. You won’t have people looking at your hair and wondering if it is a wig or not.
- Lightweight and breathable. This gives you comfort and means you can wear the wig for long periods of time. You can almost forget it is there and just enjoy yourself in your surroundings.
- Styling versatility. The lace top wig gives you a chance to style in many different ways. You can wear them up in a ponytail, you can add product to style and hold if you wish.
- Lower density. You don’t need as much hair to make lace top wigs look natural.
Cons of a Lace Top Wig
- Delicate. With it being lightweight and less dense than other wigs, you need to be careful when handling this style of wig.
- Shorter lifespan. Due to the delicate nature of this style of wig, the lifespan may be less than a more rugged or fuller style of wig.
- Maintenance. This style of wig will need more frequent ongoing maintenance.
Maintenance
Maintenance for a lace wig is gentle but easy.
- Gentle brushing from the tip to the root to avoid tangles.
- Wash with a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner.
- Rinse with warm water.
- Allow to air dry.
- You can use a hair dryer. Just allow it to airdry first
Skin Top Wigs
Skin top wigs are denser than a lace top and has a skin-like material as the base so it looks more like your scalp. The realistic scalp look allows for multi-directional parting of your hair and also allows more styles to be attempted with this kind of wig.
A major difference between a lace top and a skin top is that the ‘return hairs’, which are the short ends of the hair which is sewn into the cap and knotted, are concealed. This gives you a consistently long wig without the shorter hairs.
Pros of a Skin Top Wig
- More durable. Because more hair is used in the construction of a skin top wig, it is more durable and longer lasting than a lace top wig.
- More height and volume. Again, with more hair in the construction you can have more volume to your wig.
- More natural look. With the knots hidden within the cap, and the cap colour being the same as your scalp, you have a more natural look in your wig.
Cons of a Skin Top Wig
- Less airflow. With a layered and denser construction there is less airflow through your wig.
- Heavier. With more hair used in the construction a skin top wig is usually heavier.
- Not good for warmer climates. The thicker hair and heavier wig may not be suitable for warmer climates.
Maintenance
As with most wigs, maintenance is involved but not terribly difficult.
- Brush with a brush for detangling. Start at the ends and work your way up to the roots.
- Rinse the wig under warm water. The water must flow in the same direction as the hair.
- Small amounts of sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner & rinse thoroughly.
- Air dry for full dryness.
- Can blow-dry/straighten/curl with heat.
- Store on a wig stand or silk bag to prevent tangling.
Full Cap Wig
A full cap wig is a hairpiece designed to cover the whole head, from your forehead to the nape of your neck. It is used by people with total hair loss or a majority hair loss, or by ladies looking to really change up their normal hair style.
The styling and colour options for a full cap wig are fantastic. Because you’re not needing to blend a skin top or lace top wig into your current hair, you can have almost any style or colour you want. There is a lot of personal freedom when it comes to a full cap wig.
Pros of a Full Cap Wig
- No gap coverage. A full cap wig covers your whole head, so there are no gaps in coverage you need to worry about.
- Natural look. As it is not trying to blend in with your current hair, it looks all natural and all you.
- Hides natural hair. If you have some natural hair and feel self-conscious, a full cap wig hides all your hair so you look natural and vibrant.
- Easy to maintain. As with all wigs, they are easy to maintain and take care of.
- Strong and durable. Our full cap wigs are crafted with durability in mind. With more hair used in the construction they are stronger and can last longer than other wigs.
Cons of a Full Cap Wig
- Can be hot. With the wig being a full head of hair, it can get hot and heavy wearing it for long periods of time.
- Need to be sized right. You need to have your full cap wig fitted just for you. Too loose and it might just move around. Too tight and you may end up with headaches.
- Higher cost. More hair and more time is required in the construction of a full cap wig, so this may influence the cost.
Maintenance
- Wash gently every 3 weeks.
- Wash with warm water only.
- Use a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner.
- Be wary of washing the base too much to prevent shedding.
- Don’t brush the wig when wet.
- Air dry the wig on a wig stand.
- Do not use a hair dryer. Once dried, you can apply any heat tool.
Choosing the right product may not always be up to you. If conditions are such that you lose all of your hair, then your choice may be limited to the Full Cap Wig. Toppers are great to be blending with your own hair, whilst full wigs will give you the full coverage you many need.
Our expert caring team can consult with you and help you find not only the best choice for you, but potentially a new style and look. For some people, needing a wig can make them feel less than human. We know that with the right look you can bounce back, look good and more importantly feel good about yourself.
